Clearing Space for New Creations: My Journey to Simplifying and clearing Space for New Creations:
My Journey to Simplifying and Refocusing My Jewellery Business
For over 25 years, I’ve had the joy of designing jewellery collections that allow customers to build their personal collection over time. Each piece I’ve created has meaning woven into it—a little story or touch of symbolism that connects with the wearer. I’ve always aimed for my jewellery to not only look stylish but to make the person wearing it feel special and connected to something deeper. But as with any long journey, there comes a time when you feel the need for change.
Over the past few years, I found myself grappling with the weight of my own creations. I had too many collections to manage, too many pieces to keep in stock, and too much to display at events. More importantly, I realised that my artistic desires were evolving. I developed a passion for incorporating stones into my work and crafting unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.
The challenge was clear: I had to make some tough choices about which collections to let go. This wasn’t a decision I took lightly. Every collection I’ve designed feels like a part of me, shaped by the hours of sketching, refining, and perfecting each detail. My jewellery is deeply personal, and discontinuing any collection felt like saying goodbye to an old friend.
It took me four months to muster the courage to act on the need for change. In the end, I decided to discontinue a significant number of collections, even some that were still popular among my customers. The goal was to simplify, to clear both literal and metaphorical space for new work. I realised that I could not continue to evolve as an artist if I kept holding on to the past.
Discounting has never been part of my marketing approach, as I believe it can devalue the effort and care that goes into every piece. When makers offer discounts, it often feels like taking a pay cut—something few people would accept if asked. However, I decided to offer discounts on my discontinued collections as a way to reward my loyal customers and, hopefully, to attract new ones who might not have had the opportunity to own my work before.
Looking ahead, my collections will still exist, but with more variation and a focus on one-of-a-kind pieces. I will continue to create bespoke jewellery for clients who want something truly unique. The shift will allow me to follow my current passions, working with beautiful stones and letting creativity guide each piece rather than confining myself to longstanding designs.
This change marks a new chapter in my creative journey. While it was hard to let go, I know that it was a necessary step for growth. I’m excited to see where this path takes me and to continue crafting jewellery that is as meaningful to its wearer as it is to me.
Thank you for your support during this transition. Here’s to new beginnings and the beauty of embracing change.
